Manufacturing Engineering

Dr. G. Manikandan

Head of the Department

Mechanical engineering discipline is one of the oldest branches of engineering which is very popular among youngsters globally. Smoky engines, oil spilled floors, and dark faced workers were associated with Mechanical Engineering during earlier days, but today the atmosphere has changed drastically with the advent of computer aided manufacturing and allied technologies. Even the ‘human less’ manufacturing plants are not a distant reality. According to 2021 Global Manufacturing Risk Index, India has been ranked second ahead of some of the so called Manufacturing giants like USA. With the introduction of “make in India” campaign, the Mechanical Engineers are the ones who are going to reap larger benefits from it. The contribution of mechanical engineer can be found in various sectors such as transport, energy, military, aerospace, health care and agricultural equipment, sports, entertainment, media and many more. In general a mechanical engineer may involve in product designing, manufacturing, quality, sales and service.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering of VCET, UG was started in the year 2008 along with the inception of the institution with an intake of 60 students increased to 120 in the year 2012 – 13 and PG was started in the year 2010-11. Department has faculty members with Master’s and Doctorate degrees, who are specialized in Design, Manufacturing, Thermal and Industrial engineering which are involved in academic and research activities. The department has a well–defined student centric teaching-learning-process to fulfill the needs of students from diverse background and it has state-of-the art facilities for various laboratories and class rooms. Apart from classroom teaching, ample opportunities are provided to the students to get hands-on training in parallel with respective theory subjects.

The role of a mechanical engineer is to take a product from an idea to the marketplace. Projects, industry visits, internships and hands-on activities are designed to foster a spirit of entrepreneurship among students and to enable the budding engineers to launch their own ventures.
