The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at Velammal College of Engineering and Technology (VCET), Madurai, was established in 2007 with an initial intake of 60 students. Over the years, it has grown into one of the largest and most dynamic departments on campus, with a current strength of over 814 students guided by 30 well-qualified and dedicated faculty members.
The department offers B.E. (Computer Science and Engineering) and M.E. (Computer Science and Engineering) programmes affiliated to Anna University, Chennai, and is recognized as an Approved Research Centre by the University. The curriculum blends strong theoretical foundations with hands-on learning, covering domains such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Cybersecurity, Cloud Computing, Software Engineering, Machine Learning, and Full Stack Development.
The department is equipped with modern laboratories, advanced computing infrastructure, and smart classrooms that provide an ideal environment for innovation and research. Faculty members are actively involved in research and consultancy, having secured funded projects worth over Rs.1.1 crore from premier agencies such as DRDO, ISRO, DST, and IEI.

To strengthen industry–institute relationships, the department has signed 15+ Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) with reputed organizations such as Cisco Systems, Infosys, Oracle Academy, ICT Academy, Red Hat Academy and Cognitosphere and private limited. These collaborations enable students to gain real-world experience through internships, industrial training, certification programs, and guest lectures by industry experts.
The placement performance of the department has been consistently excellent. Students are placed in leading multinational and IT companies such as TCS, Infosys, Wipro, Accenture, Cognizant, Capgemini, Zoho, and Amazon, with the highest package offered at ₹48 LPA and an average package of ₹4.5 LPA. Every year, more than 90% of eligible students secure placements through campus recruitment drives.
In addition to academics, the department promotes holistic development through technical symposiums, hackathons, coding clubs, innovation challenges, and entrepreneurship development activities. Students are encouraged to participate in national-level competitions and contribute innovative ideas for societal development. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is equipped with 7 well-established laboratories comprising 346 high-performance computer systems. Each lab supports diverse domains such as Artificial Intelligence, Data Science, Cybersecurity, Cloud Computing, and Software Engineering. The institution provides a 1 Gbps high-speed internet bandwidth with Wi-Fi connectivity available throughout the department, ensuring seamless access to online resources. Robust network security measures are implemented across all systems, enabling students and faculty to engage in advanced research, development, and learning activities efficiently.
