Velammal College of Engineering and Technology, Madurai is actively and aggressively organizing and participating in various extension activities and outreach programs to promote the Institute-Neighbourhood community and to sensitize the students towards community needs. The Institute believes in not only promoting societal and community activities to sensitize students but also in shaping students, faculty, and staff into responsible citizens of the nation and imparting all-round development of students in each vertical. Various Society Committee team members and organizers inculcate this awareness and goodness through various programs like Cleanliness, Green Environment & Tree Plantation, Gender Sensitization, Hygiene and Environment Awareness, Plantation Drive, Mental Health Awareness, National Youth Day Celebration, Road Safety Awareness Campaign, NSS Day Celebrations, Blood Donation Camps, Eco Club Activities, Women Development and Empowerment Activities, etc. All these mentioned activities have a positive impact on the students. They develop student-community relationships, leadership skills, and self-confidence among students. They also help in cultivating the hidden personalities of students and creating awareness among them. Apart from this, the significance of clean surroundings, hygiene, sanitation in the neighbourhood, garbage disposal, and sensitizing the community at large to these vital issues is emphasized. All these initiatives have gone a long way in the holistic personality development of the participants of these programs.
Blood donation camps strengthen the sense of empathy and compassion among donors and also instil in them a sense of commitment and ethical responsibility. All this leads to informed, balanced, and responsible citizenship.
The NSS students participate in uplifting society and the community by organizing awareness programs.
Anna University permitted the institution to function with one NSS unit from the academic year 2016-2017.
